How to feed your family during quarantine

It has been almost ten weeks since we all have been home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We all have been practicing social distancing. It is becoming very important to limit our trips to the grocery store. This means we need to make sure we are stocking up on the right kinds of foods so we can make healthy and nutritious meals for our families. We must feed our kids healthy foods as it is in such times all our efforts can unravel quickly if we don't do some advance meal planning so we can have our fridge and pantry stocked with the right kind of food which will provide us with some comfort and help us to increase the immunity of our kids and family as a whole.

I am going to share some of the strategies I have been following for the past few weeks to keep my family well-fed during this time.

We have a medically vulnerable child at home so going to the grocery store at this time is not an option for us. We have been ordering groceries that are delivered to our doorstep at a small fee. It is the best option for our family as it gives us peace of mind that we are doing everything we can to keep our son safe. It becomes imperative for me to do some meal planning for the week so I can order the right groceries for our meals during the week. So if this is something you can afford to do try to order groceries online and delivered to you or you can do curbside pick up.

The next thing which has helped me is I am buying lots of food which have a long shelf life like rice, lentils, legumes, frozen vegetables, chicken, fish. This way I always have healthy ingredients at home so we can eat nutritious meals every day. I have stocked up on eggs, yogurt, cheese, bread so I can cook healthy meals throughout the day.

The next thing you can do is to regulate meal times for your kids just the way we did pre quarantine as it helps them self regulate their appetite. This has helped me in a big way. I have a son who is a picky eater and regulating his meal times has helped me as that way I make sure he eats his meals on time by reducing his junk food consumption.

It is okay to feed your family with the same kind of food every day. It is not necessary to make Pinterest friendly food every day. It is also important to buy the right amount of food so we don't waste it. This is very important especially when you buy perishables as they can spoil quickly. Wherever possible buy frozen fruits and vegetables as they are more nutritious than fresh ones and can last for a long time in the freezer.

It is okay to order take out once a week which can give you a break and also support a local restaurant. There is no need to feel guilty about it as long as we keep eating out to a minimum. If you can involve your family during meal planning so that way they are more willing to eat the meals you have cooked. Involve your kids in cooking as kids as it is an important life skill. Additionally kids will be more willing to try new foods if they are involved in its preparation. it
can help our kids to learn independence and social skills.

I personally like to cook fresh every day but you can double or triple the portions of dishes you cook and freeze them for days you don't feel like cooking. I hope I have given you some ideas to help you feed your family during the quarantine.
